The STAPLEY (incl. STAPLEIGH) surname in England dates back to 1199, possibly to 1066.
Consequently there are many STAPLEY descendants scattered around the world, and a number of genealogy researchers.
One researcher grouped the STAPLEYs into clans according to their known origin.

Four different STAPLEY clans have been represented in New Zealand

                            Elizabeth STAPLEY 1849, daughter of Thomas & Sabina of Sedlescombe in Sussex
                            married William John NECKLEN, arrived on the "Merope" landing at Timaru SCY, NZ.
                           Lived in Timaru, 15 children, buried Timaru in 1915.

c. 1875    J    George STAPLEY 1848-1899, son of Richard & Amy of Speldhurst in Kent
                                married twice in New Zealand, buried at Hokitika WLD, NZ

1879        ?    Henry Lewis STAPLEY 1857-1931, son of Robert of London & Harriet of Malta
                                arrived on the "Durham" from Australia, married Florence ROSS.
                                Lived in Timaru, died in Christchurch CBY, NZ.  Many descendants in New Zealand.

by 1906    B    Walter STAPLEY 1871-1926, brother of the infamous "Sir" Harry, and brother of Frank, Mayor of Melbourne
                                qualified 1892 MRCVS (veterinary surgeon), worked in South Africa 1896+,
                                visited USA with wife in 1899,  married 1906 in N.Z. to "Daisy" Sybil CANNON,
                                visited Australia 1910, and practised as an M.D. 1913+ in Cambridge WKT, NZ
                                survived by "Daisy" Sybil who died in 1934 buried at Purewa, and Sybil's daughter Constance.
